1. The Word Shall Urge (Ross Heselton) When the maggot moves in the unmoving bone, Combing flesh and marrow, The Word shall urge, And urge, And urge, And surge again tomorrow. When fiery lions from splintered pits Grow through winter's lifted lids, The Word shall urge, And urge, And urge, And rage again tomorrow. When the foaming heads of rotting birds Slide into the sea, The Word shall urge, And urge, And urge, And surge again tomorrow. When speeches of slaughter are heard Down by barbed wire black water beaches, The Word shall urge, And urge, And urge, And rage again tomorrow. When the tuneless moon is cold and old, And the split-lip sun spits no gold, And all that once was good and green Seems naught but soot and powder, The Word shall urge, And urge, And urge, And surge again the louder. The Word is Love. 2. And Death Shall Have No Dominion (Dylan Thomas) And death shall have no dominion. Dead mean naked they shall be one With the man in the wind and the west moon; When their bones are picked clean and the clean bones gone, They shall have stars at elbow and foot; Though they go mad they shall be sane, Though they sink through the sea they shall rise again; Though lovers be lost love shall not; And death shall have no dominion. And death shall have no dominion. Under the windings of the sea They lying long shall not die windily; Twisting on racks when sinews give way, Strapped to a wheel, yet they shall not break; Faith in their hands shall snap in two, And the unicorn evils run them through; Split all ends up they shan't crack; And death shall have no dominion. And death shall have no dominion. No more may gulls cry at their ears Or waves break loud on the seashores; Where blew a flower may a flower no more Lift its head to the blows of the rain; Though they be mad and dead as nails, Heads of the characters hammer through daisies; Break in the sun till the sun breaks down, And death shall have no dominion.

about

NOTE:

"This is the first recorded version of The Word Shall Urge. It was made over the summer of 2015 using very rudimentary equipment (a portable recorder and an sm57 microphone running through a laptop), in a house overlooking the valleys of the Dordogne in the south-west of France. I say the first recorded version for two other apparitions of this song had occured during live improvisiation sessions during the months preceding it’s making. I played all the instruments myself, and it was reworked and finalised in September of that year, with added modular synthesizer work by Pierre Mascarade and Augustin Soulard, who also took great care in refining my sometimes unsubtle use of electronics. It was first released by the collective Vie as a podcast on the web-radio r22 Tout-monde, and later issued as a hand-made CD-R limited to 32 numbered copies.

Quentin Richter’s artwork, inspired somewhat by the game of tarot, marks the first apparition of the character of The Word Shall Urge: The Word, shown here as a walker-prophet-pilgrim-guide, marching onwards with one eye forwards and one eye looking back. He is the twin-brother of the title character of Quentin’s book “OTO ou Le Fleuve Noir”, scans of which which were once available here: cargocollective.com/Leonierisjeterre/OTO (he has since removed them from the internet, but I shall leave the link online in case he ever uploads them again.)

Thank you for listening, I hope you will enjoy the music.
