1.
1. The Word Shall Urge (Ross Heselton) When the maggot moves in the unmoving bone, Combing flesh and marrow, The Word shall urge, And urge, And urge, And surge again tomorrow. When fiery lions from splintered pits Grow through winter's lifted lids, The Word shall urge, And urge, And urge, And rage again tomorrow. When the foaming heads of rotting birds Slide into the sea, The Word shall urge, And urge, And urge, And surge again tomorrow. When speeches of slaughter are heard Down by barbed wire black water beaches, The Word shall urge, And urge, And urge, And rage again tomorrow. When the tuneless moon is cold and old, And the split-lip sun spits no gold, And all that once was good and green Seems naught but soot and powder, The Word shall urge, And urge, And urge, And surge again the louder. The Word is Love. 2. And Death Shall Have No Dominion (Dylan Thomas) And death shall have no dominion. Dead mean naked they shall be one With the man in the wind and the west moon; When their bones are picked clean and the clean bones gone, They shall have stars at elbow and foot; Though they go mad they shall be sane, Though they sink through the sea they shall rise again; Though lovers be lost love shall not; And death shall have no dominion. And death shall have no dominion. Under the windings of the sea They lying long shall not die windily; Twisting on racks when sinews give way, Strapped to a wheel, yet they shall not break; Faith in their hands shall snap in two, And the unicorn evils run them through; Split all ends up they shan't crack; And death shall have no dominion. And death shall have no dominion. No more may gulls cry at their ears Or waves break loud on the seashores; Where blew a flower may a flower no more Lift its head to the blows of the rain; Though they be mad and dead as nails, Heads of the characters hammer through daisies; Break in the sun till the sun breaks down, And death shall have no dominion. 3. Bana Bir Aşk Masalından Şarkılar Söyle (Ezgi Köker) Bana bir aşk masalından şarkılar söyle Şarkılar söyle Bana bir aşk masalından şarkılar söyle Şarkılar söyle Kalbimin bahçesinde gülleri gör de Gülleri gör de Kalbimin bahçesinde gülleri gör de Gülleri gör de Seni sevmek dileğimdi, her şeyim sendin Her şeyim sendin. Seni sevmek dileğimdi, her şeyim sendin Her şeyim sendin. Sensiz alem zindan oldu sevgilim bana Dön yine bana. Sensiz alem zindan oldu sevgilim bana Dön yine bana. Seni sevdim diyebilsem ölürüm inan Ölürüm inan. Seni sevdim diyebilsem ölürüm inan Ölürüm inan. O güzel gözlere baksam eririm, eririm her an. O güzel gözlere baksam eririm, eririm her an. 4. The Word Shall Urge #2
La Laiterie, Strasbourg
03/10/2016

NOTE:

"The second incarnation of the Word Shall Urge, the first live performance of the piece as a band, came about soon after the release of the first. I had been booked to play a concert at La Laiterie (Strasbourg), but did not want to perform my solo work anymore (if you are unfamiliar with it, you can take a listen over here rossheselton.bandcamp.com), and rather wanted to try out something new, such as attemping a live version of The Word Shall Urge. A lineup of friends was thought up in order to match the arrangements of the original piece: on stage that night were Théo Cloux on the electric guitar, Merve Salgar playing tanbur (a beautiful and delicate traditionnal plucked-string instrument from the ottoman empire) and singing, and finally Augustin Soulard, who had laid down the modular tracks on the previous version, again on modular synth. This performance marked the first use of the name ALLIES to refer to this project. The name is spelled in capitals in order that it may be read both as an English word and a French word, and was partially inspired by the nickname that had been given to Leonard Cohen’s band in the 1970’s: The Army.
The composition was expanded on this show with the addition of the Turkish love song ”Bana Bir Aşk Masalından Şarkılar Söyle" Ezgi Köker, graciously murmured by Merve, and the throwing in of a line from Leonard Cohen’s “Anthem”, which I found to reverberate particularly well with the other words of the song, and with which I shall end this note: “Ring the bells that still can ring”.

Thank you for listening, Love Peace Wonder!
